Roanoke Valley Garden Club
Conservation/Beautification Committee
The Conservation/Beautification Committee is primarily responsible
for focusing our members on legislative, educational, and gardening
issues as they relate to conservation and beautification throughout our
area and the State. As the Garden Club of Virginia states, our primary
purpose will be to encourage our members to be informed advocates
for proper land management practices and to encourage local
organizations and governing bodies to support responsible residential
and commercial development.
Members of the committee will be encouraged to attend either the GCV
Conservation Workshop held in November or Legislative Lobby Day in
Richmond in January. Other options may include participating with
local area groups such as Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Clean
Valley, Valley Beautiful, or Western Virginia Land Trust, or working
with local government and businesses to improve our community. We
are eagerly seeking new project ideas for both the committee as well as
the club.
Plant & Pantry Committee
Plant & Pantry is a meeting as well as fundraiser held annually in May.
The meeting is held at a member's home and is co-hosted by another
member. This fulfills the hospitality requirement of hostessing a
meeting every three years. Awards are given as well as installation of
new officers on alternate years. Hostesses are responsible for obtaining
chairs, drinks, and paper products for the meeting and lunch as well as
a tent in the event of rain. Plant & Pantry committee organize and run
the silent auction, notify members of event, and what everyone needs
to bring. Members bring a dish for lunch and bring an item of $25
value or write a check for $25. The item donated may be food, plants,
gardening item, or home decor.
Hospitality Committee
The Hospitality Committee plans and hostesses a Garden Council
breakfast or luncheon once a year. They plan and hostess the Holiday
party, which could be every year or every other year. They also plan
and Hostess events requested by the President.
Horticulture Committee
The Horticulture Committee is responsible for preparing the
horticulture exhibit for the Annual Meeting and the Governors Meeting
with guidelines being provided by GCV. This committee also
encourages members to attend GCV horticulture events. The
committee also will provide a short program at least twice a year with
plant sharing, identification, and gardening information.
Flower Shows and Exhibits
Most fun....
The Flower Show and Exhibits Committee assists in preparing for
inclub shows including set up and clean up. They encourage you to try
your hand at arranging.
The Flower Show and Exhibits Committee participates in Garden Club
of Virginia Flower shows and assists as needed for Garden Tour. The
Flower Show and Exhibits Committee assists with inclub programs by
assisting the co-chairs in whatever capacity they may need.
